The Nativity Scene Tradition in Mallorca

For centuries, the nativity scenes have been a Christmas tradition in MallorcaBut the way they are celebrated has changed over the years. One of the most interesting elements that is still preserved on the island is the custom of hiding a friar within the nativity scenes. This tradition, which originated in the 18th century, consisted of children having to find the friar among the figures in the nativity scene. Although this tradition had fallen into disuse, the Association of Betlemistes de Mallorca has been in charge of recovering it, so when you visit the island's nativity scenes, we invite you to look for the lost friar in the middle of the Christmas scenes.
