Todo comenzó el 27 de julio de 1886, cuando el empresario Agustín Ibarra — propietario del célebre Café Inglés— inauguró en la calle del Lobo (hoy
Echegaray) un gran inmueble con una visión clara: ofrecer un restaurante de primer nivel y alojamiento de lujo que rivalizara con lo mejor de Europa.
A PIONEER IN URBAN INNOVATION
Desde sus inicios, el Gran Hotel Inglés no solo ofreció alojamiento: marcó el camino del lujo y la modernidad en Madrid. Fue el primero en integrar un restaurante propio dentro de un hotel, anticipándose a una tendencia que hoy consideramos esencial. No se trataba solo de
comodidad, sino de crear una experiencia completa, donde el arte de la hospitalidad comenzaba en la mesa y se extendía hasta el último detalle de la estancia.
Además, fue uno de los primeros edificios de la ciudad en contar con instalación eléctrica, un símbolo de progreso que hablaba de una visión avanzada para su época. Donde otros veían límites, aquí se abrían puertas. La luz eléctrica no solo iluminaba pasillos y salones: encendía el futuro.

For decades, the lounges of the Gran Hotel Inglés were a refuge for writers, thinkers and artists who left their mark on Spain's cultural history. Clarín, Galdós, Valle-Inclán, Virginia Woolf and Gabriel Miró shared gatherings, ideas and nights of inspiration within these walls.

After almost five years of careful restoration, the hotel reopened its doors in 2018 with a clear vision: to respect the soul of the past and project it into the future.
With an interior design signed by Rockwell Group and under the direction of Carmen Cordón and Ignacio Jiménez, the Gran Hotel Inglés has become the flagship of Hidden Away Hotels, recovering the essence of the 1920s with the sophistication of the 21st century.
